Church sex abuse: Thousands of paedophiles in French Church

Thousands of paedophiles have operated within the French Catholic Church since 1950, the head of a panel investigating abuses by church members says.
Jean-Marc Sauvé told French media that the commission had found evidence of 2,900 to 3,200 abusers - out of a total of 115,000 priests and other clerics.
"That is a minimal estimate," he added.

The independent inquiry was commissioned by the French Catholic Church in 2018, following a number of scandals in other countries.
Commission members included doctors, historians, sociologists and theologians. More than 6,500 victims and witnesses were contacted over two and a half years. The final report is 2,500 pages long.

Honestly, given that, if the scene from Spotlight is accurate, the rate of priestly pedophilia is 6%, the real shock is that 3,200 priests out of 115,000 seems like an unusually low estimate.

Victims of sexual abuse in the French Catholic Church have demanded action after the publication of a damning new inquiry.
Since 1950, clergy in the organisation have sexually abused some 216,000 children, according to the report - mostly boys.
Pope Francis "felt pain" on hearing about the inquiry's finding, a Vatican statement said.
Those abused are demanding compensation after the revelations.

According to the report there were at least 2,900-3,200 abusers. It said the number of children abused in France could rise to 330,000, when taking into account abuses committed by lay members of the Church such as teachers at Catholic schools, and also called for the victims to be compensated.
François Devaux, who founded the former victims' association La Parole Libérée (Freed speech), said there had been a "betrayal of trust, betrayal of morale, betrayal of children".
He called for compensation for the victims. "You must pay for all these crimes," he said twice on stage at a launch event for the report.

They found that priests and nuns alone abused around 216,000 children, but that the number climbs to 330,000 when they counted abuse at the hands of non-clergy who worked in Catholic schools and other institutions. The report only covers minors; the authors, who include scholars, psychologists, and law enforcement officials, say there could be many young men and women over the age of 18 who were also victims.
