I wish we had been out of the NATO as soon as the cold war ended.
Like we have now a bunch of NATO bases in Turkey, and the US soldiers never really went around doing the shit they've been doing during the cold war - where they essentially went around angering the locals, now they are more polite than ever.

In short, I think that Afghanistan is experiencing a sort of civil strife, much like during the old Soviet days. It's just now the case that the tables have turned.
