Like we have now a bunch of NATO bases in Turkey, and the US soldiers never really went around doing the shit they've been doing during the cold war - where they essentially went around angering the locals, now they are more polite than ever.

Well, if you were really facing an organized force of patriotic afghans...I'd say that you should even fear the women, however, what you're facing there is essentially a NATO-bred, rogue construct of power hungry extremists, who are happy to slaughter their own kind. In short, I think that Afghanistan is experiencing a sort of civil strife, much like during the old Soviet days. It's just now the case that the tables have turned.
