I disagree. The quote was about slaves, the image was of a slave. It's America, so whenever people think about slavery they think of the African slaves that were brought over. Makes perfect sense to use that image.
The problem is that rather than reacting to the fact that the Bible clearly condones slavery, they ignore the point of the billboard and take the quote as a racist statement from the owner.
I understand that what you are saying sounds completely logical to someone living in England, but over here in america it is a powder keg. Because they used that image, the entire message was lost. Because of that picture, it gave EVERYONE an excuse to ignore that the bible condoned and even helped price slaves. You saw the news footages. How many of them actually pointed out the bible passage or mention "Hey, the atheists are right, the bible does condone slavery"....NONE. Our media is sensationalist Tiberius. They would rather have clips of people crying or getting really mad instead of actually doing any responsible journalism.
Tiberius, your BBC is VASTLY superior to all of America's news outlets combined.

All I'm saying is, is that this outcome should have been foreseen, and in the interest of getting a better message across to those who you want to receive the message, they could of just chose a different bloody picture.
^^This. Regardless whether people are justified in being offended, the people behind this billboard should have had the foresight to realize that their message was going to be completely overlooked due to what would be perceived as an offensive image. Part of sending a message is proper communication, and communication is a two-way street. This means you have to craft your message in a way that people are going to be receptive to.
EXACTLY. They fucked up with their communication. They didnt study what the audience would respond to. They had a chance to appear as the good guys but instead prefered to go for the "shock factor" route.
I wonder how many people think all atheists are racist now after this major fuck up by American Atheists.
