It just sounds too foreign to me.
It baffles me how there is persecution against atheists in America or in the western world, whereas I've never seen such a thing in Turkey. And the city I live in is moderately conservative.
I've seen it in school once or twice over religion. But to be honest people will find excuse they can to bully.
Guessing that his atheism was the first thing they found to justify it to themselves.
