It just sounds too foreign to me.
It baffles me how there is persecution against atheists in America or in the western world, whereas I've never seen such a thing in Turkey. And the city I live in is moderately conservative.
I've seen it in school once or twice over religion. But to be honest people will find excuse they can to bully.
Guessing that his atheism was the first thing they found to justify it to themselves.
Well, here, religious reasons are not seen as a reason for bullying, unless there are people who put too much value on their own sect of Islam.
Even than, they are more hostile towards alevis, than towards outspoken atheists.
However, even the most outspoken atheist here is generally not taken very seriously, unless they are trying to offend people on purpose, even then, they are warned, and if they continue, ignored.
I myself have always put an emphasis on the issue of faith being a personal issue, never asked one's religious opinions, for that matter, and rarely speak to people about my own.
Then why are you on a religion/nonreligion based forum site?
Atheism is a non-prophet organisation. - A dusty old book that I found that must be completely true because someone wrote it down.
