What makes you think it is a chaotic place, many scientist say it is well organized and by what little I've seen, I would agree. God who created it, saw it come to life and has enjoyed it ever since.
The universe appears to have the behaviour of a vast chaotic system as described by mathematical chaos theory, with different types of our perceived order interchanging between them. Kind of a very big fractal, that develops in an appearant random fashion, but folowing precise laws. The fact that we don't know the whole universe just goes to show you that even the part of it we observe is vastly more awesome and breath taking than any god ever invented will.
You may seldom believe that beauty was created by your god, but you forget the implications of what your belief truly said, the 6000-ish old earth, floods, the earth being old by pillars, etc. This, by all definitions is simply being incoherent about reality. You can't accept what has been demontrated. It requires knowledge, hard work, I consider myself an amateur scientist, there is so much to learn, to test, to see for yourself, to analize the data and above all the deep humility to accept I might be wrong.
If it sounds cold to you that we are beings of energy that by means of constant trial-and-error bondings, recombinings, have managed to achieve the capacity to look into the universe and ask "why?", in essence part of the universe just trying to understand itself, then I just wonder what it takes to make a person so...
I look at a blade of grass and say how.

What? The old 'suffering enobles', 'no gain without pain 'and "everything happens for a reason" ? Oh please ,those claims are fatuous nonsense as principles.
Suffering MAY be 'character building' (whatever that means) My observation is that usually it is not.
I happen to be blessed with the ability to bear the suffering of others with fortitude, indifference, and at times. pleasure. I handle my own suffering poorly, becoming no fun at all to be around. My own continued suffering makes me really cranky, not stoic.
I also watched my father die by inches,as the person slowly disintegrated with dementia. There was nothing enobling or character building about my father's suffering, for him or those around him. That experience left me livid at the sanctimonious arseholes who prevent voluntary euthanasia laws being passed.
I have seen no proof that the universe is sentient or that there is any guiding intelligence.
Hey padraic, You know, I can totally relate to you on loosing your father. I actually just lost mine just two weeks ago to lung cancer. It was a slow death that was very painful to watch and honestly im still struggling with that one. And i can talk a big game about trials and whatnot building character but I handle my own suffering poorly as well some of the time. Its one of those things thats much easier said than done. However I dont believe any suffering is ever in vain. Its all for a purpose. Im not sure if all suffering it is meant to build character or what, I was just refering to the origional example in the post. what dosent kill us will make us stronger if we allow it to. Or we can turn it in on ourselves and deteriorate from the inside or let it drive us insane. Peace.
I can relate to the both of you, I lost my father 10 years ago and it is still difficult at times to deal with, time is a good healer, but nothing heals completely. If there was something that healed our pain because of death, I do not believe we would appreciate life very much. I've seen people die from cancer and dementia in my family and it is horrible, "deciple" I will pray for you and "padraic" I want insult you by saying I will pray for you, however I hope that you will find a peace in your life.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
