You might be interested in these posts I wrote in the 'Buddhist Atheists' thread.
While Stimbo's link is interesting, it's neither particularly accurate nor especially informative. I find the a good source of information on comparative religion. Wikipedia, if you care to take the time as well. What you will find overall though is that even a book length description is inadequate to reasonably describe the diversity within religious traditions. Some conjecture that Hinduism may be as old as 20,000 years — expecting to find one unified tradition is unrealistic.
