Death does nothing to them; it allows them an easy escape, and as an atheist I don't believe there is any place for them to go to after death. I can understand Christians wanting to "send people to hell", but no such place exists, and I'd prefer to see that person suffer for their crimes in jail rather than be put to death.
The death penalty is the ultimate hypocrisy; it is murdering people who commit the crime that is itself murder. It is unjustifiable on that point alone, without going into the whole issue of the execution of the innocent.
