It was, really, I think we're making it sound somewhat worse than it really was. Though there was the everpresent threat of the banhammer, it generally - though not exclusively - only tended to get brought out against the more whacked-out nutjobs. However the owner, Chris, wasn't exactly known for his tolerance or patience, and so there was rarely much of a warning before the inevitable splat. Sometimes all it took was minor violations of the rules, which included proper punctuation, spelling, grammar, and capitalisation of proper nouns. That actually was a biggie, I remember.
It was the members that made the forum, just like here but less so if anything. Really, it was only towards the end that the shitstorm blew up (horribly mixed metaphor but appropriate). What had happened was that Chris suddenly banned one of the longest-serving and popular members over something really trivial. Then when others protested, they found themselves banned as well. It just spiralled from then on; several others specifically requested to be banned, which they were.
Some time later, after most of us had migrated to another board, Chris shut up shop, citing pressures of moderating it and leaving the possibility of returning when he had more free time. That was in 2009 (coincidentally, exactly one year to the very day before my own precious Princess was stolen from me).

At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
