I'm new to the forum and clearly in the minority in my point of view, but I'll express it anyway. If this gets me run out of the forum then it was inevitable anyway.
Have you seen the statement that Romney's comments were a reaction to? It has now been removed from the State Department's website, so I don't have the whole thing, but some of it is here from a CNN article: http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/201...nt-page-3/
Take a good look at that last sentence - "the embassy firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."
Now I know many atheists are liberal, democrats, anti-american etc. and that may apply to some, all or none of those who posted above me in this thread, but come on, as an atheist, you have to see the danger in having the US government call it an "abuse of free speech" to "hurt the religious beliefs of others."
You also have to know that the vast majority of the US mainstream media is pro-democrat/liberal and anti-republican/conservative. So while it may seem that the entire world is united in condemnation of Romney's statement, you need to understand that you're hearing that from a media that colludes to create a negative Romney story. (I can provide some evidence of that separately if you doubt it.) But if you look at the conservative media, including what Bill Kristol (cited in the OP article as apparently critical of Romeny) had to say, you'll see support for Romney's statement. And I support it as well, because I think it is very dangerous for the government of United States to apologize for the use of free speech by our citizens.

Quote:Tuesday morning in Egypt, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo released a statement stating it "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims." The statement came after protests erupted in parts of the Arab world in response to an online video found offensive by Muslims.
While the statement doesn't specifically mention the video, it says the embassy "firmly reject(s) the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."
