I think that every American ought to be forced to spend a couple of years living in the UK or France (on a rotational basis). And then, they might see the benefits of full "free at the point of delivery" healthcare, and stop using the dreaded "socialism" mantra every time it is mentioned.
You have the Obamacare model because a proper socialised system was beaten into a pulp by Republicans (and the insurance companies). It could be called a step in the right direction... or, at the very least (if it really is that awful) the introduction of something like the NHS would be welcomed by even the hard-line Republicans at a future date.
