I was quite the handful too, and my parent never laid a hand upon me. All I needed was the phrase "What would Dad/Mom say about this?" in order to constantly think things through before I did anything. For granted, as any other child does, I did my share of mischief, but I was always respectful towards my parents and felt the appropriate amount of shame when they were disappointed in me. The only 'rebellion' I did was to study to become a nurse against their recommendation. Yet, I got good grades in school, ate my veggies, came home at appropriate hours etc. without corporal punishment.
My sister has three energetic boys aged three and four and they all respond really well to verbal chastising when needed and are seldom disrespectful, because she and her husband have taken the time to explain to them 'why' instead of losing their tempers and hit the boys.
If you were beaten as a child, I'm not surprised why you are the way you are today..
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
