I didn't mean to suggest that you are doing something wrong. If that's the music you like then fine. But I thought that maybe the video game music theme was overriding the "this is my music" theme. It seemed like we were getting into the "this is the music from a video game that I love" instead of "this is music I love" which is what I think the thread is about.
What I'm doing wrong is using music that doesn't hold up as well outside of context. Not only is it out of context, but there would be actual gameplay as associated with it, so when two out of the three parts are missing it is understandable why it might fall short. I will try to use either music that holds well regardless of where it is, or perhaps openings (like the Fire Emblem one). Not only are these 'in context' but, more importantly, opening music tends to be much more significant than most other pieces from a game.
EDIT: Also worth noting is that I've never owned a music storage device in my life, so game-related music and some anime is all I have...sorry, I'll try to pick pieces that stand on their own better in the future.
