I don't know how true this is, never having flown nor indeed intentionally been off the ground, but I'm led to believe that in the days of inflight smoking in pressurised cabins, the cabin air was recycled far more often than it is now. So, paradoxically, it seems the air was actually fresher before smoking on aircraft was banned. Having said that, I too dislike it when people smoke around me in enclosed spaces, especially when I'm trying to eat. I don't go all psycho on them or anything, at least outside my head.
