The nervous system is just one, biological, application of a concept.
The introduction of malicious code into (and the methods of counteracting it within) a system is a act we have given a biological metaphor: 'viral infection'. A conscious computer could present its systems of damage/threat alert and response as the practical equivalent to our ability to utilize pain.
Of course that biological 'application' is also the origin of the concept and whether it has application anywhere else is debatable.
