Halal and kosher should be illegal forms of slaughter.
They actually would be throughout the EU (they are in breech of the UK's slaughter house act) if it wherent for persistent lobbying and legal exemptions.
A far as I'm aware, halal and kosher slaughter is illegal in Switzerland and Norway, but I could be wrong, precisely because the academic consensus on the matter has been that they bring undue suffering when compared to stunning.

I can find limited research journal articles at best that indicate halal/kosher are preferable alternatives to stunning. The majority who advocate it are not science based research journals but rather theological journals or just sites with vested interested who give no real scrutiny to the claims they are promoting.
Also, any 'research' paper that begins with the tag line "In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful" should be treated with immense skepticism.
