It was done deliberately to let Adam realize that that fellow humans, not animals were meant to be our true companions.
The verses about the animals can seem out of place or can give the impression that God first tried to find a helper for Adam in the animals. This assumption is incorrect.
This is just a fairy tale. It never happened. And not only is it a fairy tale it is exactly why humans abuse our global ecosystem, because poison like this story sells us the idea that the environment and life around us is disposable, when it is not.
We are one species in evolution, we are not an apex. Cockroaches have been around a lot longer and outnumber us. The most plentiful life is bacteria.
Eagles have better eyesight than humans. Whales and dolphins have separate breathing and feeding tubes and are not at risk of choking like humans are.
