If god commanded it, it was assumed to be moral, so I see no problem in their putting in those things as they thought they were justified. It demonstrates the power of god. Why do you think people used to be called "god fearing"? No matter how obviously wrong something is, the bible calls it righteous if god commanded it, and unfortunately a lot of people take that self anlysis at face value.
