I wasn't sure what he meant by 'serious musician'. I only mean 'someone who plays and maybe writes music'. Compositionally they're not fantastic, but all the sets together is usually very well done. As a band, they did well enough, and covered up for their 'talent' (the real question).
Lyrically... garbage. Trash. About the same as 90% of the other bands typically manage.
No one is trying to claim that their lyrics were Shakespeare. But really they were talented musicians, and singers.
