I guess if you really wanted to take 2 weeks off from technology and just enjoy the culture, you really wouldn't go to an internet cafe. He should have perhaps turned his mobile on for a minute or so every night so he could get texts (the roaming charge isn't that much for texts).

The girlfriend was really at fault here. If my friend goes on and on for ages about his holiday, and then phones up the night before to say he is going, I don't suddenly forget it the next day...
