I can sympathize with those people that bought a place because it is nice and quiet and then some time later a noise polluter comes along. But you can't tell me that when you inspect a house you do not notice an airplane coming over every 10 minutes or a church bell ringing every half our, or a mosque that calls to prayer 6 times a day.
The airport example always annoys me, too. My point about people getting used to noise is that most will, but some awkward buggers will start making a fuss. I live 100 yards from the church and in between is a farm which often smells and where they bring the cattle in for milking about 4am. We accept it and like it. 
BUT if some nuisance were to appear suddenly in our midst, we might have a fair reason to decide that we couldn't get used to it, and to protest.
Only sheep need a shepherd.
