I knew a couple of straight folks who were engaged for 11 happy years before getting married. After the marriage, they lasted 1 year. As Maelstrom said, the entity of marriage changes people. You do not need to be "legally married" to enjoy the benefits that a marriage offers. A religious arrangement or not, the joining of two people should be up to the individuals. Nobody should be able to tell you who you can or cannot marry in my own opinion. As for why they fight to have it called marriage as opposed to a civil arrangement is most probably to make their love sound equal in our PC culture.
They are our equal, men+men, women+women, they should be able to share their love openly as us straight people do; without interference or fear of retribution, whether from angry, uptight religious or their own beliefs.
