Well, I know maternity leave can be that long, but it does not have to be. Also, I'm not sure about the UK, but you usually do not get benefits for any kind of leave until you have been employed for a sufficient amount of time. I mean, a company should not have to pay a woman maternity leave if she has worked there for only a few months.

In the UK, a company has to pay up irrelevant of when the maternity leave started as far as I'm aware. I'm actually a massive fan of the maternity leave, I think all mothers should have 1 year with their newborn. I;m also against paternity leave. In addition to that, mothers should have more flexibility with regards to the work schedule than fathers, simply because in my opinion, there is nothing more valuable to a newborn than having their mother (or their father depending on their circumstances) nurture them and take care of the in the first several years of their life.

Without a proper upbringing, kids will turn out acting like animals, society disintegrates when too many mothers neglect their children. Call me old-fashioned but the UK govt does agree with me and has taken steps in the right direction.
