I took a college course in music and we used to always discuss things like this but the origins of the names of these genres have totally lost their meaning.
Pop music, just means popular music, but this could be any style of music which just happens to be popular but no one really calls Metallica a pop band.
Indie music means independent from major record labels but this obviously isn't the case, the music people call indie now is basically a style, like grunge without distortion.
There's too many bullshit dance music genres to list, it's usually started by fucking hipsters, they see a lot of people with glasses, for example, dancing to a house music song and then "glasses house" music is a genre to them.
