Frankly, I think it requires a total change of perspective. As an atheist, your perspective (I think) is that you are the ultimate authority for you: you decide what is right and wrong, good and evil, and nobody, not even God, has a claim on your life. Everything, including your understanding of the Bible is decided by you. To understand the Bible as the revealed Word of God would require you to change this perspective such that God is and is the ultimate authority. If the Bible is not viewed with that perspective, the only thing you will get out of it is what you already think.
