I've never been a fan of the "you were never a true Christian to begin with" because I know different. I was born into Christianity and raised to be one of the most fervent believers I knew. So if you tell me that I was not a true Christian, first of all you don't know me personally, and secondly you couldn't know what I believed when I was a fervent believer. Thirdly, if someone who believes in God & Jesus, heaven & hell with all their heart isn't a true believer, then who is?
No, it's just a cop-out to try to explain to themselves how someone could leave the faith. It's much easier to say they weren't really in it to begin with.
