Hello almal! Hoe gaan dit vandag met julle? Ek het 'n lekker dag gehad, maar gelukkig is dit nie heeltemal klaar nie. Sien julle later!
A new world just opened up for me
It's so weird, Afrikaans is so similar to Swedish. I understand some, but it's really frustrating that I don't understand it properly. (Actually, Afrikaans reminds me of a drunk Dutch trying to speak a mess of Swedish and German )
It "evolved" from dutch so should be fairly similar (I promise that I didn't say anything rude there - I just asked how everyone was doing).
The unfortunate thing is that we (and the dutch) can understand each other but cultural differences can cause huge misunderstandings.
My favourite story of this happening is a friend who went over to holland to visit his girlfriends parents. (This is a tiny bit naughty, so please feel free to ask me to remove it from introductions if it's too much or snip it)
Parents: So, are you happy to be here
Him (translated from afrikaans): Yes, I am very excited to see my girlfriend again!
Him (what it sounded like in dutch): Yes, I am really horny because I'm seeing my girlfriend again.
...
A while later
Him (afrikaans): I'm going to the men's room for a little bit.
Him (dutch): I'm going to the men's room for some masturbation.
After hearing that story I vowed never to speak Afrikaans in Holland ever
Any spelling mistakes are due to my godlessness!
