They just want to fill space and shift newspapers. The best way to do both at once is to troll the reader base and having a resident 'controversial' blogger fits that brief perfectly. They could always run a counter-piece showcasing the other side and if they upset enough people, an apology. Either way gets them in the news. It's what passes for tabloid journalism these days.
