It's not necessarily a question of being stupid. Probably the majority of religious people are above average intelligence, at the very least. It's more to do with gullibility, a short-circuit in critical thinking that makes a person accept without hesitation anything that some figure of authority tells them if it reinforces jealously-guarded beliefs, especially if it's reinforced in turn by other authority sources ("a lie told often enough becomes the truth", but more effectively to a mindset that desperately wants that lie to be truth in the first place).
