I have to agree. Though I actually have a (very basic) degree in music and piano, I started to play by just hearing songs and figuring out how to play them without any tutelage. I also learned how to accompany* all by myself. When I got to the point in my studies when it was supposed to be taught, I had already mastered the basics, so my teacher took me aside from the rest of the group and tailored lessons fit to my level. But having the theory just makes it easier to (of course) read sheet music and compose (or at least write down your own music). I see music theory as a strength, but not a necessity to make awesome music or being able to be technically proficient.

*Is that the English word for it, when you do not play solo, but sort of staying in the background, just helping another musician enhance their playing, by playing chords instead of the melody?

i started on organ and piano end 60 s ,

stopped after 6 yrs, but when i once got a guitar , and learned the first chrds, of course i knew about I, IV and V , however ..it was just sufficient to jam with status quo...

when trying to play along , and write down (in groovy scritp) things like boheminan rhapsody from queen or things like boston....u really need to know the theoretics...becouse if u dont its just trying to find a chord , just by trail and error..

and becouse u know how harmonics work, u r able to make nice ones urself, and analyse quickly difficult things like jazz..

if u r planning to play a solo , u fist have to write down the entire piece of music in groovy script ...to help u to know what notes r going to be in it ..like the key , the lines, so u know what to expect .

and by harmonics i mean the teaching of Rietmann..3 and 4 notes chord harmony .. and standard modulations.

* accompany ..i dont know, my english is bad...but ``background harmonics`` .. probably means the same .

u have to know what u r doing and where u find other notes outside of the pattern at 1 location u ve learned out of the book ..

then ...the trick !!

when u r good enough in musical theoretics ...AND COUNTING WHILE U U PLAY !!!!

then buy an old taperecorder with multiple speeds..the speeds must be half of the fasted speed ...like 19 cm /s the fastest ..the other must be 9,5 cm .s //

this ensures that what solo u record on the fast speed, will be 1 octave lower and half as slow.!!

in my days we had still records and turntable with adjustable speed...so u could tune ur guitar exactly in A...and then adjust the key the record is played in to that ...or make a compromise..so ur guitar played in the same key as the music on the record......

and 2 3 yrs of 4 hrs a day does the trick ...

I can't think as fast as I can play, with regards to naming the notes while playing them, I don't think you really need to know how to do that.

ever tried to copy something like malmsteen , vinnie vincent , mr lee(Ozzy 1986), and more of those incredible good guys?? steve lucator(toto),

if u r just playing pre chewed patterns, and dont know what u r doing , the pattern will never evolve becouse its just played as an automatic riff u have copyed from someone else...u know it works, but never be able to make something else out of it .
