Why don't we tell the 14% to BE QUIET? Well, there's a little thing called "equality" that the USA is built around. The Declaration of Independence opens with the words "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
Thus a government should speak for the people, not tell the people what to think, or take a position that doesn't represent the entire population.
12% of the population are black. Should the majority (white) be in support of a motto that says "America - The whiter the better!"? I think you'd find hardly any people in America who would be behind such a motto. If you can make that decision over something like race, you can rationalise it over religion as well.
