The space station is supposed to have a non-geostationary orbit.
That elevator would require the station to always be at the same place, relative to the ground.
My theory is that all reality shows are just for psychologists to evaluate what happens when a small group of humans has to live by themselves for long periods of time and in a restricted environment.
The actual trip to Mars should be done by people who manage to remain friendly with everyone...
