Lashes... as in with a whip? hitting your back and ripping the skin open with each lash? 100 lashes? 50 lashes?
I've never been submitted to such a treatment, but my guess is that 5 are more than enough to make you regret anything permanently... and have a long lasting scar on your back.
More than 5 is just plain brutality and bloodlust.
To have such a punishment in place, in the 21st century, is, to me, barbaric... there are other ways to punish people.
Much graver crimes get much milder punishments...
