My neighbor 3 doors down the street fled Iran when she was 13 with her parents. Because they weren't Muslim her parents didn't feel safe in their own country anymore. Really sad in my opinion.
I've been to a number of strict Islamic countries, but never felt threatened or unsafe there (but being a man might be the reason for that as well, I'm not sure if I'd like to take a girfriend to Oman). Iran wasn't one of those countries I visited, but if the stories by my neighbor are anything to go by a revolution might be exactly what that country needs. Perhaps a remodeling of their political system to that of Turkey. Still Islamic, but politically more secular. I won't bring up Jordan, due to the anti-monarchistic tendencies of certain members.
