This is just another language barrier encountered when translating Arabic to English .
The word used here is Arabic "sudur" , if I'm not wrong . It does not mean "breast" but we have such meaninglesss translations when people try to translate words out of the their context . So in English , I can use the "beat it" sentence pattern to describe "going away" action or "getting out" action . But someone could translate it in another language as "beating people" in the sense of harm . Probably people would not understand what means the original words .
The purpose of this word usage here is to define "intent" , so verse says Allah know your intentions , he know your hearts . A metaphor .
