Material items is referring to man made activities.
Observing nature for 1 hour is equal to 70 prayers. Going to the beach and getting flesh air, watching animal shows are all a form of worship of Allah as they are all his creations. These activities are a benefit in themselves and also a benefit will be given by Allah to observe the beauty of the world.
The maidens of heaven are a reward for believers and many people have claimed it will indeed be possible for women to have something as they desire. The # 72 is without accurate source but martyrs will receive more than the average believer in paradise as he/she sacrificed their lives.
Current day martyrs include those innocents civilians blown up by terrorist Al Qaeda and Taliban who's destination is hell.
