Thor, that is too funny, I've had the same arguments with the herds in my area.
My wife's father committed suicide when she was only 8 years old. When she was growing up, she had preachers and their flocks tell her that he was burning in hell for taking his own life. If there is any one thing that got her to questioning religion (Xtianity) that was by far the start..
For me it was the something close to what you questioned on Hitler and everyday common descent people who had a different belief than a Xtian, or non-belief...
Of course the more "laxed" xtians will usually reply with it's god, who knows, etc. etc. etc.
One of the things that bugs me about religion is the scare tactics they use. I recall seeing something that was used at one of those "Bible Camps". It was an audio presentation where you were supposed to imagine this friend of yours had died. You heard the friend's voice screaming out about how he was getting tortured and thrown into a lake of fire. The entire time he was screaming "Why didn't you tell me about Jesus? You knew about Jesus and you never told me! They're throwing me into a lake of fire! Why didn't you tell me? You could have saved me!" etc.... This went on for a good ten minutes. The whole thing was designed to get the kiddies to tell their friends about Jesus!
Can you believe it? The message is that your friends who are not Christians will be thrown into a lake of fire unless you tell them about Jesus! And if they end up in this lake of fire because you didn't tell them about Jesus... IT'S YOUR FAULT!
Absolutely despicable. And I'm supposed to "respect" religious beliefs like this?
Science flies us to the moon and stars. Religion flies us into buildings.
God allowed 200,000 people to die in an earthquake. So what makes you think he cares about YOUR problems?
