I disagree. Germans themselves were always a proud people, and rather militaristic in character too.

Besides, Germany was always a problem from the viewpoint of non-Germans. This is why France supported the brutal Versailles treaty that was aimed at humiliating the German nation and depriving them of anything that they could use to develop to become a strong nation.
