That's a real shame, because he almost certainly wasn't!
I think he meant well, but that's my perception of what was going on. When you suddenly get an onslaught of something you've hardly ever been told about yourself it's disconcerting and my first reaction is to be suspicious. It's kind of like when you're feeling down and a friend tells you a white lie to make you feel better and then all your other friends pile on - you might believe the first friend, but then this tidal wave of compliments bowls you over and you get suspicious that they're just lying to you to make you feel better. That's kind of like what I felt was going on but it was all coming from one person.
