People learn by dividing things into catagories. Although in the real world, it is usually not that way. For instance, we learn colors and assign them names. In the real world when you look at the light spectrum that goes from ultraviolet to infrared, there are no lines of distinction to separate colors. They all blend.
Studies have been done on different cultures who learn their colors differently. They were asked to compare two colors: yellow and yellow-green, then rate them on a scale of 1-10 as to how different the colors were. People who saw them as the same color underrated their differences. People who saw them as different colors over rated their differences. Very few were able to rate them correctly.
This is the reason why we live in a polorized society. It is a natural function of the brain.
I would suggest that conservatives are more narrow in their catagories, making most issues black or white where liberals see more gray.
