teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Yeah, the Bible Belt fought hardest to maintain slavery.
Or look at the long history of apartheid in South Africa, evolution was not allowed to be taught. The Christian National Education system was formalized in 1948 and accepted as national policy from 1967 to 1993. The policy excluded the concept of evolution, taught a version of history that negatively characterized nonwhites, and made Bible education, including the teaching of creationism, and religious assemblies compulsory.

I don't know the details of the study, but I wonder if the correlation doesn't go the other way. (ie. bigoted and narrow-minded people don't like to do much studying, and therefore aren't familiar enough with the facts to realize how plausible a theory evolution is.)

I concur that it would be hard to establish directionality one way or the other. But the quotes from the OP seem to suggest people doing just that (meaning rejection of evolution causes racism). Again, I don't know the details of the study, but I'm more apt to agree with you that "the same underlying thing" causing both racism and rejection of evolution is more plausible. |
