You know what, ego? I used to laugh at you like you're a funny little kid. Now, I think you're as disgusting as this thread, and frankly, I'm nervous for the day your mommy and daddy unleash you onto the rest of the world.

I've often heard it argued that rape is worse than murder. As a physical act, it clearly is not. Physically, rape involves a temporary loss of liberty, a risk of pregnancy or disease, and possibly some vaginal tearing or other physical injury, likely minor.

I've received MUCH worse injuries, physically speaking, including having the shit beat out of me by skinheads. We're talking massive concussion, cracked rib, and permanent (minor luckily) eye damage. It took me (and my friend) weeks to (mostly) recover from the beating. Yet many would agree that rape is worse than that. But why?

It is because the VALUES we are raised with result in our world view, and in our sex-obsessed, Victorian-residual culture, create a dangerous world view. Young children, especially girls, are taught that sexual purity is an all-or-nothing state: either you've remained pure, or you are permanently-damaged goods. A bad sexual encounter is seen as a kind of strike against the soul, an attack at the center of one's humanity. But it doesn't really have to be that way-- a changed world view can allow someone to say, "Yeah, someone stuck his dick in me 10 years ago, and fuck him for doing it-- but that's in the past, and right now I'm sitting here enjoying a beautiful sunset with my kids." People can CHOOSE not to be victimized by past events.

I can see this view coming from a time where a girl/woman's value was closely tied to whether or not she was a virgin. Nowadays we're more likely to think of men as jerks if they refuse to have anything to do with a woman if she's had sex before. Not that a woman really needs to be with a guy to be successful in the modern age anyway.
