I confess I haven't paid much attention to the old fool since I heard about his theory in grade school.

professor, professor... you worry me. Natural selection does not make decisions, it just happens.
Let me explain,
Imagine the somewhat simplified scenario: two hawks are born, hawk 1 has a mutation which lets it fly a bist faster, the other doesn't. Cue 10 years later, hawk 1 has 30 offspring, hawk 2 only 10 because he wasn't able to catch as much food for the young ones. The number of animals with this gene increases slowly, while the other variety is slowly replaced over the generations. No decisions were made in the process.
