If you can stomach it take an NRA safety class. It may be a very long day, and you probably won't have much in common with the others beyond an interest in firearms; but it can really teach you the basics of firearm safety, how to fire a rifle etc.
I'm glad to know other atheists own guns! I was starting to think I was the only one (silly obviously lol). I don't have a rifle (my one partner does have an AK though), but I carry a Glock 30 with me when I go into the bad parts of the city. A concealed carry class is also a good idea if someone has interest in firearms. It'll really get you comfortable with pistols in particular.
