I've been given the advice to just pronounce Latin based botanical names with confidence. There is no one living who speaks Latin as their mother tongue to contradict you.
Apparently young-earthers and other fundamentalists feel the same way about geology and other fields of science. Sadly for them the situations are not parallel. Their mishandling of science generally and shoddy interpretation of evidence is obvious to anyone with a sound rudimentary introduction to a field.
