Humor, even in rather serious topics, can be very good. It relieves pressure and tension, making everyone feel better.
However, at the same time it can derail topics or tone down the seriousness of the thread farther than it was intended to be.
But, i think the good outweighs the bad by a good margin.
Also, as far as emoticons go, they are fine where they're at. Maybe they need to be toned down, but doing so would create more problems than they fix.
(Yes, the emoticon thing is directed to YOU, Sae.)
