Fag can mean gay but only in North American culture. In fact, the meaning of the word comes not from gay, but from the french word "fagot". The expression designates a stupid man by comparing him to "un fagot" which means a piece of wood. If you were gay, you would probably be more open minded, and less of a "fagot", pun intended.
