Can you have non-belief in a deity if the deity does not exist? I find it kind of weird going around claiming not to believe in something which does not exist.
No, you're messing up your boolean algebra. Whether or not a thing exists, a person can have a positive belief in it or not have a positive belief in it. A person can also hold a negative belief that the thing doesn't exist. Here: lets try an exercise on a different, but similar concept regarding belief.
Do you have a positive belief in unicorns? Yes or no.
Do you have a negative belief that no unicorns exist? Yes or no.
Personally, I don't make the positive claim that God exists and I don't make the negative claim that he doesn't exist. I don't see enough evidence for either. I just don't let the notion of the possibility of any particular non-falsifiable god affect my day-to-day decision making.
