The War of 1812 was absolutely conclusive in several ways (one should be informing us right now)
-The notion of british naval supremecy had nothing left. British captains were going on their paper of record complaining that the americans were, essentially, cheating. That our "frigates" were actually ships of the line in disguise. They were - and we sold a few to the french as well. This was equivalent to modern day airpower. We had become a nation with a decisive technological advantage (though admittedly still inconsequential in number). They had migs, we had f18's. We trained our gunners and crews - they did not. Professionalism.
-We showed that we were a stable nation - that we could continue to exist and wage war with our capitol city on fire. I want to point out here that we see a "modern war" in this. This was our first. They weren't burning down our houses and farms (when that did happen the people involved were dealt with) - and we weren't standing at the wall of a keep trying to save some symbolic city or die in the process. Our ground forces were doing away with the idea of "bought commissions" and starting to lean on career soldiers.
-The one that should inform us now. We were an insignificant military force, ultimately. Our capitol was razed with relatively little trouble. The opposing force was powerful - and barely even noticed us. But here we are, a few hundred years later. We "won decisively" by simply continuing to exist. Honestly, that's the highest bar for a lesser force to practically achieve. Expecting more is to mythicize conflict.

Happy 4th yall -
