I can read german very well... but I've got no way to understand what it is I am reading
I doubt many modern Americans can comprehend German on a common basis (in the intended sense by the german speaker/writer)... I think a good number of Americans can read it and sometimes also recognize it as German

Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day
